About the Program

The Retail University Career Center is beginning its formal Internship Program summer 2004. Prior to launching the Retail University we placed 36 students in 24 retail-related companies. We are adding sponsors everyday such as: J.C. Penney, Strange's Florist, Shevels Mens Wear, S&K, Williams and Sherrill, C.P. Dean, Ben Franklin Crafts, La Difference, Metropolitan Convention Center and Visitor's Bureau. The purpose of the program is to benefit both students and employers. College students receive professional work experience and skill development. Students also learn best practices in full-time job search through an internship search such as networking, resume writing and interviewing skills. A few students have the opportunity to complete two internships before graduation, which propels them into an elite class where few can compare. In this current job market, students must work to position themselves to be the best amongst their peers.

Through internships, employers receive the opportunity to observe potential full-time employees. Interns give companies the chance to work on special projects and new ideas. Many companies use the internship program as an intense interview process challenging students to bring new ideas to the table on pending issues concerning the company. Companies who offer internships find their recruiting efforts on campus to be more successful. Our students pay attention to companies who show their commitment to Longwood University. An internship is one of the first indicators.

The Retail University Career Center is committed to giving both our students and employers a quality program through offerings such as coursework, guest speakers, internships, and other relevant experiences.
